The hike up Cerro Negro can take up to 2 hours. The path is in fairly decent shape, but the incline can be challenging to manage. Once you get to the top of the active volcano, it will be time to put on all of your protective gear. I had a lot of fun dancing around in the orange suits! You will be asked to put your backpack inside the jumpsuit with you so you don’t have to worry about holding on it.

There will be a few lines forming at the top of the volcano where you will prepare to board down one-by-one. It can be really nerve-racking staring down the volcano, but your guide will explain how you can slow yourself down or speed up.

The guides took photos as we boarded down Cerro Negro. They also had a speed gun to let us know how fast we were going. I was nervous and maintained a slower pace of around 18 km/h. There were others who flew down the volcano at quicker than 40 km/h!
