Lanna Smile Thai Cooking Class in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Trying a cooking class in Thailand is a must-do activity and Lanna Smile Thai Cooking is definitely one of the best options in Chiang Mai. The food in Thailand is so delicious and affordable that you’ll want to take a class and learn how to make the food traditionally. In this cooking class, you’ll make 5 traditional dishes and learn about the different ingredients and how to prepare them.

After visiting Thailand and taking this class, Pad Thai and Spring Rolls have become dishes that I frequently make. While I can’t find all the ingredients where I live, I try to follow the cook book they gave us as closely as possible!

The Cooking Experience at Lanna Smile Thai Cooking

Hotel Pick Up

The cooking school offers a hotel pick up for those staying in Chiang Mai City. They conveniently pick you up at the door, drive you to the market, to the cooking school, and back to your hotel at the end of the class.

Market Tour

The first stop on this excursion is to visit a local market. This is one of my favourite things to do when travelling because I enjoy seeing what locals sell and the different vegetables around the world. On this tour, the guide will show you different foods you will be using during the cooking class. They will explain the flavours, dishes they are used in, and vegetarian substitutes.

Right after, you will hop back in the truck and head to the cooking school.

Soup and Spring Rolls

For the first round of cooking, you will choose a soup and make spring rolls. When I was there, there were 3 soup options:

  1. Hot and sour prawn soup
  2. Coconut milk soup with chicken
  3. Hot and sour soup with roasted chicken

I chose the hot and sour soup with roasted chicken, but with tofu instead as I am vegetarian. The ingredients came pre-portioned on a plate for you to chop and add to the pot for cooking. You are free to add as much spice as you want while cooking too!

While we each got to make our own soup, the spring rolls were a group activity as it was easiest this way.

Noodles

I LOVE Pad Thai. I make it at least twice a month and typically order it from a restaurant in that time as well. So, you bet this was my favourite dish! When I was there, we had the option of 3 types of noodles:

  1. Pad Thai
  2. Drunken Noodle
  3. Fried Thick Noodle with Soy Sauce

For this round, my protein was tofu and I left out the egg. I also added a bit too much spice!

Curry

Thai Curries are definitely some of my favourite dishes to eat. What was fun about this part of the cooking class is that we got to make our own curry paste from scratch! We had the option between green curry paste, Pa-nang curry paste, and Khao Soi. The curry paste you make here will go into one of the 3 curry dishes:

  1. Green curry
  2. Pa-nang curry
  3. Khao Soi

When I was in Chiang Mai, I ate at the same restaurant 4 times as they had the best vegetarian Khao Soi I’ve ever had. You bet that is what I chose to make here too!

Dessert

While I’m not typically a fan of desserts, it was definitely fun to cook a Thai dessert! For the dessert round, we had the option of:

  1. Sago balls in coconut milk
  2. Sweet sticky rice with mango
  3. Banana in coconut milk

I chose to make the sweet sticky rice (pictured above with the Khao Soi I made). It was quite good!
