Best Things to Do on Your First Trip to Morocco
Visit A Local Market on the Weekend
The markets in Morocco are filled with beautiful handmade items, great food, plenty of souvenirs, and so much more. One of the most popular markets to visit is the Weekend Market in Marakesh. It is such a large market that you will get lost in the alleyways between stalls! As the prices are cheap, it is a great one-stop-shop for all your Moroccan souvenirs.

Try Fresh Juice From a Juice Cart
You’re bound to see plenty of juice carts near the markets on your first trip to Morocco. They are so beautiful to look at – covered in all different kinds of fruits that are perfectly aligned. Most juices are sold for around 10 dirham, which is really great for how good the fresh juice tastes!
Visit Hassan II Mosque
Casablanca is home to my favourite mosque in Morocco – the Hassan II Mosque. The architecture and design of this mosque are so extraordinary. It is the largest mosque in Africa and one of the largest in the world. It is one of the few mosques in the country that allow tours through the buildings.

Purchase Spices at a Spice Shop
Honestly, this was one of my favourite things to do. The spice shops boast beautiful bright colours and are so aesthetically pleasing. I purchased a chilli spice that was a mix of over 40 spices and it is so good!
Visit Ouzoud Falls
Ouzoud Falls is the tallest waterfall in Africa and is a lot of fun to visit on your first trip to Morocco. If you take a tour to the waterfall, you’ll likely get to stop at a few places along the way and play with monkeys.
Explore the Waterfront City of Tangier
The city of Tangier isn’t visited as much as some of the other main cities in Morocco. but, it was one of my favourite cities! It is nestled along the water and boasts incredible views. I stayed at a 5-star resort, which was surprisingly affordable. The city has plenty of shopping and restaurants to check out.
Stay at a Traditional Riad
Riads are definitely the most popular accommodation in Morocco. The traditional houses are covered with intricate designs that are so photogenic. You can typically expect a large building with an opening in the middle (usually with a little pool), breakfast served in the morning, and friendly owners.
Eat at a Local Restaurant
The best thing to do when visiting new cities is to try the local food. After visiting Morocco, I started eating a lot more couscous and stews. There are plenty of traditional dishes to try, but it can be a bit limited if you are vegetarian like myself.
Explore the Picturesque City of Marrakech
The city of Marrakech is what attracts many tourists to visit the country each year. The city is filled with beautiful architecture, incredible markets, riads, and is the main city to start various tours. Most people tend to base themselves out of this city to explore the desert and exciting attractions!
Visit the Desert
The rolling dunes of sand in Morocco look out of this world. The undisturbed sand really looks just like a painting! In Morocco, you can explore the extraordinary Sahara Desert. Many head out on multi-day trips to camp in the desert and take amazing photography!
Hike in the Atlas Mountains
The other-worldly landscapes in Morocco continue with the Atlas Mountains. They make for a great hike and break from shopping and eating (probably too much) food.

Your list definitely covers the top things to do in Morocco. Obviously, a trip to the souk is a must, no matter the city you go to, a visit to the souk should be in the itinerary. When I first visited the country, I went to stay at a friend’s house so experienced something completely different from my second trip!

On a visit to Southern Spain, we easily reached Morocco across the straits of Gibraltar. Being it as our 1st Islamic country experience, , it was quite a cultural shock. How about you?
