How to Get to the Tarpon Feeding Dock
Location: Calle La Posa, Belize
The tarpon feeding dock is located quite close to the action by the Lazy Lizard and many of the hotels on the island. To get there, you will walk down an alley that looks quite residential, with a sandy street guiding the way.
When you get to the end of the street, it will almost look like a swamp area, but trust the adventure. You will see a dock at the end, which will have a little hut on it. This is where you will go to feed the tarpons! When you get to the dock, you will be greeted by the people who sell the little fish to feed the tarpons. If you’re lucky, you might spot a giant bird like the Brown Pelican that will try to steal your bait!
Cost of Feeding the Tarpons in Caye Caulker
When I visited in early 2022, the cost was 5 Belize Dollars (~$2.50). For the cost, you get a bowl of sardines. I recommend trying 2 bowls a person – it is a lot of fun!

After arriving at the dock, you will be greeted by the tarpons right away. They love hanging around the dock as they are fed so frequently by those on the dock and tour boats that stop by! You will surely be amazed at how large the fish are swimming around.
Buy a tub of sardines from the locals running the shop on the dock. The fish certainly stink, but don’t worry, there is a hand-washing station right there as well. If you’re able to, wait until there are very few (or no other) people feeding the tarpons at the same time. This way, you can chat with the locals and learn more about the fish as well!
To feed the tarpon, there are a couple of ways to hold the fish. First, you can hold the tail between two of your fingers, and keep your hand flat while hovering a few inches above the water. The fish will jump and grab it from your hand, which can be a bit scary, but is it ever exciting!
The second way is to throw the fish out into the water. This way, you’ll see how quick the fish are as many tarpons will bolt toward the fish trying to get it.
Try both ways, as both are very entertaining. Be sure to get photos and videos feeding the fish from your hands – it is a really neat experience to share with friends and family!
