Costa Blu Beach Resort Review
Getting to Costa Blu Beach Resort
Not going to lie, it is quite the trek to get to Costa Blu Beach Resort! When flying to Belize, you’re likely to land at their international airport, Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE).
From here, you have two choices to get to San Pedro:
- Take a Tropic Air Flight from BZE to San Pedro ($$)
- Take a Taxi to the ferry, then the ferry to San Pedro ($)
Option 1: Tropic Air Flight from BZE to San Pedro
Cost: ~$100 USD
Time: 15 minutes plus time waiting for boarding
I chose to travel via this option as it was the most convenient for me. It cost me around $100 USD to travel to San Pedro by Tropic Air flight and I recommend this route to those who have the room in their budget for it.
At the airport, you’ll check in for your domestic flight and they will take your luggage, including carry-on bags. I was only able to take a small backpack on board. When it’s time to board, you’ll walk onto the tarmac and be greeted by a small plane, often referred to in Belize as a “puddle jumper”.
Take-off and landing are quite an experience if you haven’t been on a small plane before. Once in the air, you’ll enjoy extraordinary views of the water and islands off the coast of Belize. It is certainly a flight to remember!
Pro Tip: Avoid BZE and Tropic Air on Saturdays at all costs. It was a total zoo and Tropic Air turned into a disorganized mess, functioning as a shuttle service calling people’s names who’ve checked in. Complete chaos!
Option 2: Take a Taxi to the Ferry, then the Ferry to San Pedro
Cost: ~$40 USD ($25 USD for the taxi and $15 USD for the ferry)
Time: ~2 hours (30 minutes taxi and 1.5 hours ferry ride)
This alternate option is more budget-friendly to get to San Pedro, Belize. I didn’t take the ferry here, but I did take it between Caye Caulker and San Pedro. You can check your large bags onto the ferry and carry your smaller luggage right onto the boat. There were plenty of seats available and it was overall a very smooth ride.
Once you arrive in San Pedro, you can have the hotel pick you up. Definitely arrange this ahead of time with the resort. It will cost $45 USD, which taxi drivers at the airport are known to charge very high prices for tourists. I heard someone was charged $100 USD!
The ride to the resort takes around 20-30 minutes, as the resort is located to the north of San Pedro. The road is extremely bumpy and filled with pot-holes, so it is quite the adventure.
The Rooms at Costa Blu Beach Resort
As you walk down the path through the resort, you’ll see plenty of green and blue buildings that look a bit like cabins. Each building is home to 4 suites with separate entrances from the outside. The suites boast an adorable patio set on the deck, perfect for enjoying your coffee in the morning. You’ll also be surrounded by the lushest palm trees and have a view of the ocean!
The suites are very spacious, with a large room when you enter featuring couches and chairs, a dining set, and a kitchenette. There’s also a TV set up to help you wind down from the long day in the sun. In this area, there’s also a door that I believe can be opened to join the two suites together.
The kitchenette is fully equipped with dishes and utensils, along with instant coffee, tea, and a water cooler for drinking water.
The bedroom is quite basic, offering a king bed and a large closet that has a safe for you to use. I must say that the bed here is the firmest I’ve ever slept on! The pillows weren’t as fluffy as I thought they would be, but at the end of the day, I was too tired to care too much.
The bathroom in the room was very basic and in need of an upgrade. Toiletries and a hairdryer were provided, along with plenty of towels. Avoid putting toilet paper into the toilet as the plumbing is weak like many places on the island and it won’t flush!
Overall, the suite I booked at Costa Blu Beach Resort was average. But, if you’re like me and don’t plan on being in the room too often during your trip, it’s perfectly suitable. Plus, the stunning pool and bar make up for it a bit!
Restaurants and Dining at Costa Blu Beach Resort
There is only one restaurant at the resort, located in the main building. There are tables on the deck and by the bar where you can sit and enjoy your food. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including a variety of Caribbean dishes, burgers, salads, and more.
As a vegetarian traveling to Belize, I didn’t expect to have much variety in food choices and it wasn’t a surprise to me when there were 2 items I could eat on the menu. However, the chef was kind and made the fajitas vegetarian for me and they were great! I ordered breakfast one day with hashbrowns, fruit, toast, and jam as well which was good.
The bar is a full-service bar, serving everything from local beers like Belikin to tropical drinks like a pina colada, rum punch, and much more. I spent most of my evenings here chatting with some of the staff and other guests. The bartender was such a joyful man who was great to chat with!
I was surprised to find so many other solo travelers at the resort. It was really easy to talk to others who were also eating or drinking alone by the bar and get to know a bit about their lives!
Must-Try Drinks:
- Belikin – a local beer. Try the regular version.
- Rum Punch – this seemed to be the drink of choice on all of my excursions.
- Panty Dropper – LOL yes it is a strange name, but a delicious drink! I believe it was coconut rum, pineapple juice, and grenadine.
Things to Do at Costa Blu Beach Resort
Rent a Golf Cart
Golf Carts are the main means of transportation around San Pedro. At the resort, you can rent a Golf Cart and head to town to explore. There are plenty of nearby places to visit, including Secret Beach.
Go Kayaking
Kayaking was offered at the resort and I believe it was free of charge. I wanted to kayak when I was there, but it was way too windy and the water was too choppy to be able to steer the kayak by myself!
Swim in the Pool
Well, this one is a no-brainer! The pool is way too gorgeous not to go in. After swimming, relax on one of the chairs and admire the view of the ocean.
Snorkel in the Ocean
At the end of the dock, there’s a ladder where you can get in and out of the water easily. I brought my snorkel from home and headed out to see what was there. Right by the stairs, I saw multiple lionfish and other tropical fish swimming around.
Get a Massage
The resort offers different massage options, including one where they set up tables by the ocean for a very relaxing massage!
Book an Excursion
There are plenty of excursions you can book where you can get picked up right at the dock at the resort. The front desk was super helpful talking me through my options and putting me in touch with a dive shop to head out to the Great Blue Hole for snorkeling.
How Long Should You Stay at Costa Blu Beach Resort?
I would say 3-4 days is plenty of time to spend at the resort. It gives you enough time to relax and hang out by the water, as well as go on an excursion. It was quite quiet while I was there, so I think I would have gotten bored if I stayed much longer. After your visit, I would recommend taking the ferry over to Caye Caulker to continue adventuring Belize!
Is Costa Blu Beach Resort Worth the Price?
When I stayed in April 2022, the price per night was around $180 USD. I’ve seen the price on Expedia reach over $280 USD per night. To me, it was worth the price to visit for a few nights to unwind and relax in paradise. I found it was on the cheaper end of resorts in San Pedro and I certainly enjoyed my time there!
Conclusion
Overall, I enjoyed my stay at this resort in San Pedro. While the rooms could use updating, the property boasted a tropical and relaxing paradise that I really needed on my vacation. The friendly staff made my stay that much more enjoyable, as did the good drinks!

I haven’t been to Belize since the late 1990s. I imagine that it’s changed a lot since then. We never felt comfortable in Belize and most other people who we’ve talked to say the same thing. It’s a little bit like travelling to Jamaica.

Oh huh, that’s interesting! I visited Caye Caulker and San Pedro solo and had a blast. In my experience, I didn’t have any problems or discomfort adventuring around. I met a lot of cool locals who I hung out with over the course of my trip who made it even better!
I suspect it has changed a lot for sure. The areas I visited were quite touristy and there were plenty of families and other solo travellers around too!

This post is so awesome! It’s so detailed! I love how you mapped out the whole trip! It gives such a great idea of what to expect! What really stood out to me were the taxi trip and the ferry. I get motion sickness, so just reading how how bumpy the roads can be made me feel a little queasy! Lol. I wonder if I would get sick on the ferry, I have never been on a boat before! I would like to go on a cruise or something, but with my motion sickness I’m not so sure that’s a good idea! Lol. Another part of your post that stood out to me was the bathrooms on the island. You mentioned the flushing isn’t very strong. It made me think about water conservation, and how sometimes I can be prettty wasteful. I know I need to work on using up less resources and saving water. I’m saying that, but I need to actually try! Lol. And of course, your pictures are beautiful! It sounds over all like you really enjoyed yourself! I know how beautiful the Caribbean can be, but one day I would love to experience that for myself like you! Great post!
