Nestled in the heart of Colombia’s coffee region, Quindío offers a delightful blend of picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and unforgettable experiences.
Here are some of the highlights that make this department (aka state or province) a must-visit destination:
Nevado del Ruiz
A volcano steeped in legend and history, Nevado del Ruiz dominates the landscape with its snow-capped peaks. It’s an active stratovolcano that offers breathtaking panoramic views from high above in the clouds and an exciting opportunity for trekkers.
Not-so-fun fact: The 1985 eruption of Nevado del Ruiz killed over 23,000 people, making it the second-deadliest volcanic disaster of the 20th century and Colombia’s worst-ever natural disaster.
Cocora Valley
Home to the towering wax palms, a visit to the Cocora Valley is like stepping into a painting. The ethereal beauty of this place is truly incredible, with its otherworldly landscapes and unique flora and fauna.
Small Towns
From cobblestone streets to colorful houses, the towns of Quindío are full of charm and history. Salento, often the first stop for many, is known for its vibrant streets and a viewpoint overlooking the Quindío mountains. Filandia, another hidden gem, is known for its artisanal handicrafts and panoramic vistas from the Mirador Colina Iluminada.
